15th International Symposium on Pollutant Responses in Marine Organisms – Bordeaux(33), May 19-20 2009 / Séminaire Sols pollués - Pessac(33), 16 juin 2009

15th International Symposium on Pollutant Responses in Marine Organisms – Bordeaux(33), May 19-20 2009 CONFERENCE BACKGROUND

A range of environmental contaminants have been shown to alter the health of aquatic wildlife. Consequences of these alterations include impaired physiological or behavioural mechanisms, increased occurrence of diseases, loss of biological biodiversity and thus impaired sustainability of ecosystems and their economic value. Significance of xenobiotic action appears to be global with transboundary issues highlighted by research performed in polar areas. The impact of inputs of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems is likely to be aggravated by climate change and increased water abstraction which, when combined, will result in less effective dilution of effluent> Ensemble des eaux usées (traitées ou non) provenant d’une usine de traitement des eaux, d’égouts ou de rejets industriels. Ce terme désigne généralement les déchets rejetés dans les eaux de surface.s and their contaminants in receiving waters. The impact of xenobiotics on aquatic environments is thus of major international concern and a key priority issue. In this challenging context, research in the ecotoxicoly field is rapidly developing. New analytical methods are deployed and an increasing number of contaminants are now been measured in the aquatic environment. Some of these chemicals are referred to as “emerging compounds” enabling to identify potential new endpoinds and mechanisms of actions to be explored. In parallel, several biological techniques such as the “omics” are more extensively used to provide a holistic picture of the cell coordinated response to xenobiotics. Nevertheless there is still a need for a better understanding of responses to toxic agents at different levels of the biological complexity (i.e. community, species, tissue, cellular and subcellular level) and thus more integrated strategies together with innovative approaches are critical.

About the Conference

CONFERENCE BACKGROUND

A range of environmental contaminants have been shown to alter the health of aquatic wildlife. Consequences of these alterations include impaired physiological or behavioural mechanisms, increased occurrence of diseases, loss of biological biodiversity and thus impaired sustainability of ecosystems and their economic value. Significance of xenobiotic action appears to be global with transboundary issues highlighted by research performed in polar areas. The impact of inputs of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems is likely to be aggravated by climate change and increased water abstraction which, when combined, will result in less effective dilution of effluents and their contaminants in receiving waters.

AIMS AND THEMES

The main objective of this conference is to promote discussions of high scientific quality among a worldwide audience. Participants of this conference will include a number of prominent experts as well as young researchers in the fields of aquatic ecosystems contamination and mechanism of effects of xenobiotics on wildlife. The conference will provide an international and friendly forum for exchanging state-of-the-art information, knowledge sharing, and networking, with focus on xenobiotics, mechanisms of action and relevance to the ecosystems. Relevant research areas include advances in chemical analysis, and chemical identification of toxicants, mechanisms of toxicity in aquatic environments and the understanding of responses to toxic agents at subcellular, cellular, tissue, species and community level. One special objective of this conference is to broaden our view on new compounds, new areas, new mechanisms and new integrative concepts on xenobiotic effects in aquatic ecosystems.
